“Damn.” Brendon’s eyes darted between them. “Talk about serendipity, right?”
Margot forced out a chuckle. The universe was playing a cosmic joke on her, that was for sure.

Plot Summary

Margot Cooper doesn’t do relationships. She tried and it blew up in her face, so she’ll stick with casual hookups, thank you very much. But now her entire crew has found “the one” and she’s beginning to feel like a fifth wheel. And then fate (the heartless bitch) intervenes. While touring a wedding venue with her engaged friends, Margot comes face-to-face with Olivia Grant—her childhood friend, her first love, her first… well, everything. It’s been ten years, but the moment they lock eyes, Margot’s cold, dead heart thumps in her chest.

Olivia must be hallucinating. In the decade since she last saw Margot, her life hasn’t gone exactly as planned. At almost thirty, she’s been married… and divorced. However, a wedding planner job in Seattle means a fresh start and a chance to follow her dreams. Never in a million years did she expect her important new client’s Best Woman would be the one that got away.

When a series of unfortunate events leaves Olivia without a place to stay, Margot offers up her spare room because she’s a Very Good Person. Obviously. It has nothing to do with the fact that Olivia is as beautiful as ever and the sparks between them still make Margot tingle. As they spend time in close quarters, Margot starts to question her no-strings stance. Olivia is everything she’s ever wanted, but Margot let her in once and it ended in disaster. Will history repeat itself or should she count her lucky stars that she gets a second chance with her first love?

Review

Based on how much I loved Written in the Stars, I had high hopes for Count Your Lucky Stars, and Alexandria Bellefleur absolutely delivered.

Margot is just fine being single, or at least she was until everyone in her friend group paired off. And she’s happy for them, she truly is, but she also can’t help feeling like the fifth wheel. That doesn’t mean she is looking for a relationship, though. But fate has other plans.

While checking out Brendon and Annie’s wedding venues, Margot runs into the last person she ever expected to see again, Olivia— her childhood best friend and first love. Olivia also happens to be Brendon and Annie’s wedding planner, is recently divorced, and by another twist of fate, is in need of a new apartment. And Margot just so happens to have a spare room.

Living together shouldn’t be a problem. What happened between them was eleven years ago. It should be in the past. But the same sparks are there, and they have to decide if they’re going to take the second chance they’ve been given.

I’m such a sucker for a childhood friends to lovers trope, so I was bound to love Count Your Lucky Stars, but add in some pining, spicy texts, and a cat, and I was hooked. Of course, it had that trademark mix of fun, sexiness, and heart I’ve come to expect from Bellefleur’s writing and the wonderful found family dynamic with the friend group. Also, since this was Margot’s book, the astrology references were back in full force, which if you read my review of Written in the Stars, you’ll know I loved it.

The chemistry between Margot and Olivia was palpable from page one, and it only got better as their relationship progressed. The yearning between them was well written and continued even once they’d rekindled their relationship—at least their physical one—which led to my favorite (and very niche) trope, which I affectionately sum up as “pining idiots with benefits to lovers.” Also, speaking of their physical relationship—the sex scenes. Wow, Bellefleur really kicked it up a notch with this one, and I am not at all upset about it.

This book also had one of the few instances where the miscommunication trope didn’t have me wanting to throw my book (or, in this case, Kindle) across the room. Their miscommunication was realistic because teenagers are dumb, and it didn’t act as the final conflict of the book, which was also a plus.

Hang the Moon is still my favorite from the series, but Count Your Lucky Stars was a fantastic conclusion to the series. I loved how we got a happy ending for not just Margot and Olivia but for the rest of the gang. Alexandria Bellefleur has definitely made it onto my list of auto-buy authors.
