The world’s worst meet-cute had been turned into an adorable romantic comedy that everyone was talking about. Starring me.

Franny Doyle is having the worst day. She’s been laid off from her (admittedly mediocre) job, the subway doors ripped her favorite silk dress to ruins, and now she’s flashed her unmentionables to half of lower Manhattan. On the plus side, a dashing stranger came to her rescue with his (Gucci!) suit jacket. On the not-so-plus side, he can’t get away from her fast enough.
Worse yet? Someone posted their (entirely not) meet-cute online. Suddenly Franny and her knight-in-couture, Hayes Montgomery III, are the newest social media sensation, and all of New York is shipping #SubwayQTs.
Only Franny and Hayes couldn’t be a more disastrous match. She’s fanciful, talkative, and creative. He’s serious, shy, and all about numbers. Luckily, in a city of eight million people, they never have to meet again. Yet somehow, Hayes and Franny keep running into each other—and much to their surprise, they enjoy each other’s company. A lot. But when Franny’s whole world is turned upside down (again!), can she find the courage to trust in herself and finally have the life—and love—she’s always wanted?
I’m such a sucker for romances set in New York, so I knew I had to read In a New York Minute when I saw this title.
Franny’s day couldn’t get worse—at least that’s what she thought when she stepped foot on the subway after getting fired. She was wrong. It could, in fact, get worse because now her entire backside is showing after the subway doors caught her dress and ripped it to shreds. Thankfully, a handsome stranger steps in to save her by giving her his suit jacket. However, the bad luck doesn’t stop there because the whole interaction was caught by someone on Instagram, and now her subway “meet cute” is trending.
It wouldn’t be that bad, except she and the handsome stranger Hayes are complete opposites and somehow keep running into each other. But when Hayes takes a chance on Franny by hiring her to be the interior designer for his new office building, they discover that maybe the fact that they’re total opposites isn’t such a bad thing and might even be exactly what they need.
I’d requested this book because of the promise of a romance set in New York, and in that regard, I wasn’t disappointed. This book was an absolute love letter to the city between Franny’s interactions on the subway to the farmer’s market dates in the rain.
I always love a good meet-cute, but there’s something underrated about a meet-ugly, and Hayes and Franny’s first meeting is precisely that. Yes, the situation seems completely implausible, and so are the rest of their chance meetings, but that was half the joy of reading this book. It was as if the city was pushing them together, almost like magic.
I also loved the side plot of Franny discovering her family. It added depth to the book that perfectly balanced the otherwise lighthearted story. My only complaint is that the conflict felt a little forced and delayed at the end. I had expected the reaction to the catalyst to be more immediate than it had been, so when it finally came, it felt a little unnatural. However, the resolution recovered nicely, so overall, I still enjoyed the story.
In a New York Minute is a delightfully fun, slow-burn romance with witty banter and just the littlest bit of steam, and if you love New York romances as much as I do, I definitely recommend it.
